On January 1, 2018, a new Suffolk County law will go into effect, charging a five-cent fee for plastic and paper carryout bags, at a variety of retail stores. Those in support of the fee believe it will protect the environment. Those against view it as a tax that will hurt local businesses. Losing the ability to deduct local and state taxes from your Federal tax burden will be a crushing blow to Long Islanders. The Long Island Association (LIA) estimates it will cost our community an additional $2.5 billion in taxes.

The plan is another example of failed trickle down economics

Conservatives have trotted out this trickle down scam once again and like clockwork, the working class get 0 to little effect. Jobs have STILL been outsourced at a record high last year. Over 95,000 jobs. More than Obama's highest. I thought the tax cuts for businesses would help keep workers employed here. More lies. This scam is nothing more than a short term money grab for greedy, relatively wealthy, unempathetic, old, rich white people; as the income inequality mounts, tensions rise and the Overton window moves quicker to more populist left programs. Remember Carrier? Yeah the state gave carrier $3M in hope that there would be no cutbacks. Not only were there layoffs, they outsourced anyway. Im sorry for being condescending, but civility is dead now with this attack on class. You folks in Nassau County need to educate yourselves on Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), which a highly distinguished economist from Stony Brook University has been laying out. It turns out we can cut taxes AND raise wages AND provide the benefits that workers, teachers, the sick, young families, PoC, immigrants can use to actually better contribute and create without the crippling financial burden of long island taxes. You were all scammed and even the well-to-do, wont even feel a ripple. This tax break was for the mega wealthy. We NEED more tax brackets and need to go back to an FDR style economy with MMT. Tax the billionaires 90% after their first billion. End the wars, unionize, Medicare for all, free college, free pre K!. The fucking bronx has it, but I have to pay 1300 a month for my 2 yr old to go to tutor time? Jesus. You're fuckin young people and the hard working for what? An extra hundred bucks? This has got to change or long island median age will be that of a Florida retirement village. Its socially irresponsible of you to support these cuts and frankly ignorant of you think you won with this. Unless you're Elon Musk or some asshole like that.
