On January 1, 2018, a new Suffolk County law will go into effect, charging a five-cent fee for plastic and paper carryout bags, at a variety of retail stores. Those in support of the fee believe it will protect the environment. Those against view it as a tax that will hurt local businesses. Would you support Nassau County imposing a five-cent fee on plastic and paper carryout bags?

In an effort to get both sides of the aisle to communicate better have Democrats and Republicans sit in alternate seats as opposed to sitting separately during Nassau County legislative meetings. I would hope this would create greater communication and non-partisan behavior during public meetings.

point of view

I left the County Legislative meeting the other day suggesting that things look very different from the public speakers podium? It would certainly look very different to them who are accustomed to sitting up there. I was graciously given more time than was alloted and somewhat made welcome but I spent the last 48hours thinking of whether or not I could have sqeezed out more time to make more points. I'm happy to say that one of them was the suggestion above! It's feels good to know there are others around me that share this "point of view". It's hard when you stare at one government and it looks like TWO? It's even harder to make good suggestions stick as the first one that chimes in owns it the second takes the opposite course.... but they all say they are on our side? Perhaps we should hope for something more extreme? "we the people" could sit up there and call upon them to speak...... alternating goverments of course and they must sign a request first to be able to speak even if they don't know what they are about to speak to............... and how long we will listen?
