On January 1, 2018, a new Suffolk County law will go into effect, charging a five-cent fee for plastic and paper carryout bags, at a variety of retail stores. Those in support of the fee believe it will protect the environment. Those against view it as a tax that will hurt local businesses. Would you support Nassau County imposing a five-cent fee on plastic and paper carryout bags?

This suggestion applies to all local governments.

Residents should have access to basic data about their local governments at all times.

Nassau County should publish all budgetary data for all Special Districts, Towns, Villages, School Districts, etc online. The data should not just be raw numbers but should be summarized so it is easy for residents to read.

For example each budget report should show the tax levy over the last 10 year period, and the break down into major categories like salaries, healthcare, pension, reserves used, etc.

Also all election dates, meeting dates, and cadidate information shall be provided.

http://seethroughny.net/ does something similar to this, but it is difficult to use and the information is not comprehensive.

It would be great if residents could get all the data about their local governments by just typing in their zip code. Each time the data is updated, residents could receive an email.
