On January 1, 2018, a new Suffolk County law will go into effect, charging a five-cent fee for plastic and paper carryout bags, at a variety of retail stores. Those in support of the fee believe it will protect the environment. Those against view it as a tax that will hurt local businesses. Bag TAX

Why is plastic still in play? Charging for a plastic bag is not about the environment. IF saving us from plastic bags is the reasoning behind the "environmental inconvenience fee" then WHY is plastic even an option?
Hawaii removed plastic in its entirety, paper bags will cost you.or you bring your own.
The water quality was not destroyed by plastic bags and a 5 fee / tax wont fix it, wont save the dolphins, seals or turtles. Is this money going to clean ip the environment? No. It goes to the retailer. Is it tax free revenue money for the retailer? Doubt it. Its now county and state revenue. Can the consumer return the bags like a bottle deposit? No. You bet it's a money grab wrapped in an environmental conservation blanket.

Go back to paper, its biodegradable, otherwise this is just a money grab! It is very inconvenient partly because when you need a bag at the self serve cashier there is no one to offer you one and its not about the lousy 5 cents. Paper is a great alternative...
