On January 1, 2018, a new Suffolk County law goes into effect that charges a five-cent fee on disposable plastic and paper bags at a variety of retail stores. Those in support of the fee believe it will protect the environment from degradation. Those against are concerned it will hurt local businesses because the five-cent fee is nothing more than a tax.
